Lego, or, My Edifice Complex

Image
I think it’s time I spoke about my “edifice complex.” I refer to my avocation with Lego models. It began on a day in late December, 2019, after seeing my least favorite Star Wars film, “The Rise of Skywalker.” I DO NOT LIKE THIS FILM! I was put off by its disjointed lack of structure and technique.   I was repelled by the unneeded return of a villain from the past.   I had seen it the day before with Susan and our two friends, Lily and Liz.   I was seeing it that day with Susan, her sister Mary Grace, and Mary Grace’s family, the Hansons. I DO LOVE THESE PEOPLE!  THESE ARE GOOD PEOPLE!   HONEST AS THE DAY IS LONG! At the Hansen’s place, I got to see Mary Grace’s elaborate Star Wars-themed Lego collection.   Collection is an understatement.   I saw set pieces of the Death Star trench, the Sarlaac Pit, the Battle of Hoth - I lose track from the top of my head the complex Lego-scape. PHOTO NOT AVAILABLE.  SORRY. Mary Grace and I had a civil disc...

Star Wars' Andor: One Way Out, or, Fidelio.

Andy Serkis and Diego Luna in Andor  Disney Plus/Lucasfilm Andor , the latest Star Wars series on Disney Plus has been an uneven slog for me.   The protagonist isn’t as iconic in appearance or character as The Mandalorian, Boba Fett or Obi-Wan Kenobi.   Some fans, such as Jayne Theory’s YouTube channel, say that Andor’s adult themes and the sketchiness of the protagonist “isn’t true Star Wars .”   Other YouTubers, like the published author Will Jordan (aka The Critical Drinker) are engaged by the series for the very same reasons, saying that the non-iconic character isn’t burdened by the same expectations as Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi.   The series revolving around the bounty hunter and Jedi knight, respectively, have met a lukewarm response from critics and an outright disliking by fans.   This can be seen by reviews on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I watched the first three episodes of Andor, which were released on Disney Plus at the s...

Disney Plus, Minus My Interest

*Sigh* Perhaps, dear reader, you recall my episode by episode critiques of The Book of Boba Fett?   With each post, I desperately swept hither and yon trying to find some scene of value.  I can only recall one episode where Boba Fett exhibited any kind of agency - "The Tribes of Tatooine."  In every other episode he acts like a total doofus.  He is overshadowed by two characters from a different Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.   So in retrospect, Boba Fett - a Star Wars character who has intrigued many fans over the years - fails to live up to his full potential. But that was only the beginning. Up next, waiting in the wings, was the Moon Knight series.  He is a character from Marvel Comics who bowed onto television via Marvel Studios, another tentacle from the writhing face of the Elder God that is Disney.  Marc Spector, Marvel's answer to DC Comics' Dark Knight, is overshadowed by one of his bumbling DID alters, Stephen Grant*.  Where Moon...
