I Am Afeared of the Sun.

In the summer, the sun is my loving friend.  The sun is a radiant beacon which, by illusion, is suspended in the aquatic blue sky.  It blesses me with a warmth so intense, that I retreat to the pool in my building to temper its heat with cool water.  It is a pleasant relationship. HOWEVER, in autumn and winter, the sun becomes a little distant in our relationship.  It ducks out of the sky faster than I have time to appreciate it.  An unwelcome wind bites my skin, even through the ever increasing layers of clothing.  The sky turns a mocking cobalt, forbidding rather than nurturing.  The sun changes its mood, and it intimidates me. So I hide in the bunker of my home, no longer lured into the open.  I look out the large window of my apartment and I learn to fear the sun.  The sun demands I stay home. My Personal, Peculiar History with Quetzalcoatl.

  I have a peculiar history with this Aztec deity. The history book tailored for grade schoolers about Hernán Cortez said that he was mistaken for a god by the Aztecs.   The details are a little hazy, but it had something to do with their ships, their armor, their boom-sticks, smallpox… okay, I’m going off track again.   My point is, my pop and I started investigating the names of gods that the Aztecs actually worshipped.   The most prominent name w...

My Cosmic Carpet.

This began as a post-it sketch I made outdoors in Thomas Paine Park on April 1, 2004.  It was unusually balmy for that time of year and I was in a peaceful state of mind. As anyone who knows me can tell you, I am an aficionado of the Sumerian goddess Inanna.  I have collected every book I could find involving her, most prominently Inanna - Queen of Heaven and Earth by  Diane Wolkstein and Samuel Noah Kramer. In one chapter of Wolkstein and Kramer's book, Inanna is described as traveling through the sky in the "Boat of Heaven."  Some people (whose names I can't remember off the top of my head) have inferred that the Boat of Heaven signifies Inanna's vulva.  Others (whose names I can't recall immediately) say that this Boat of Heaven is no different than Helios' Sun Chariot or Anubis' boat which travels through the Underworld.  Others say the Boat of Heaven is the conveyance of the planet Venus, who in Sumerian mythology was embodied by Inanna.  There i...
