Eärendil and Other Dreams.

I was at the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.  I was exploring the section for music scores and I came across the score for The Voyage of Eärendil.

For those not familiar with the name Eärendil or his voyage, he is a character created by JRR Tolkien who has a chapter dedicated to him in The Silmarillion.  The Silmarillion are stories written by Tolkien that were compiled and published by his son Christopher.

Eärendil was described as a mariner who took on the dangerous task of sailing to the land of the Valar, who are godlike beings.  The Valar had long forbade anyone from Middle Earth to come to their lands.  However one of their fallen kin, Melkor, had been causing great distress in Middle Earth.  Eärendil pleaded to the Valar to help the peoples of The West and rid them of Melkor’s evil once and for all.  The Valar were moved by Eärendil’s courage and compassion and agreed to come to the aid of the peoples of Middle Earth, however they forbade Eärendil from returning to his homeland.  He was sent into the heavens along with his wife Elwing and his ship Vingliot and became the morning and evening star (Venus) who brought hope and courage to his kin in their Alliance with the Valar in the great battle against Melkor.  Eärendil confronted and slew Ancalagon the Black, the greatest and most fearsome dragon in Melkor’s Host.  The light of Eärendil continued to inspire hope among Elves and Men.  Some of his light was captured in a small phial which was gifted to Frodo Baggins in his quest to destroy the One Ring of Sauron.

So back to the music score.  I found a vinyl recording of the score and went to a listening booth.  It was beautiful and inspired adventure.  I felt it belonged in a movie. I was told by a librarian that there was no movie connected to The Voyage of Eärendil, so I resolved to write and direct a film based around the score.

My next dream involved a conversation I was having with a woman I knew from my old job.  It was friendly and we were catching up on what each of us have been up to since I left the Department.  She stopped at an ice cream truck and we said our goodbyes.  She was about to make her order and I called out, “Say no to work and remember to take your drugs!”  This enraged a woman waiting on the same line as my friend.  She followed me down the street threatening to report me to “The Court” and that it would damage my career.  I kept walking without a backward glance, but when I woke up I was convinced I was going to lose my job.

*Sigh* Another persecution dream.

That’s all for now.  As Happy Harry Hard-On said in Pump Up the Volume:  Ear your cereal with a fork and do your homework in the dark.
